The Marvelous Mondavis

The Marvelous Mondavis

From Grapes to Legacy

When Italian immigrants Cesare and Rosa Mondavi moved to Napa Valley in the early 1900s, they had no idea their name would become synonymous with pioneering the American wine industry in the 20th century—and beyond.

Originally a greengrocer, Cesare began buying and selling grapes. By the early 1940s, he had started making wine, and soon after, the Mondavis purchased the Charles Krug Winery from a German immigrant family. Their sons, Peter and Robert, learned the trade—and excelled.

Two Brothers, Two Paths

Although the brothers eventually parted ways, Robert became the more recognizable name thanks to his flair for both winemaking and promotion. Meanwhile, Peter and his family quietly grew their company into one of the most successful wine brands in America.

Today, Peter’s son Marc Mondavi runs the Charles Krug Winery and has launched several other labels.

Growing Up Mondavi

Marc recalls:

“I’ve always been involved in wine production. Even in elementary school.”

Like many children of Italian parents, he grew up with wine all around him.

“We never had just one bottle of wine on the table at dinner.”

Marc later studied at the renowned UC Davis wine program, training under many of the most famous professors of the era. When his daughters later attended UC Davis, they even had to use assumed names because the Mondavi name was so well known.

Terroir Above All

Marc emphasizes the importance of terroir—a French word often translated as “soil,” but which encompasses climate, geography, and all environmental influences.

“Terroir creates the end result. It’s the dirt that impacts the fruit the most.”

He believes in being “true to the earth,” and the winery proudly highlights that everything they use—from bottles to labels—is Made in the USA Certified. The family also supports veteran organizations, including the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

CK Mondavi: Wines for Everyday Enjoyment

Marc and his team produce several brands, including CK Mondavi, a value-priced lineup with nine wines ranging from Pinot Grigio to a Bordeaux-style red blend called Scarlet Five.

At a recent dinner, Marc poured two wines from this collection:

Medium-bodied with citrus aromas, apple, and a touch of oak. Includes 95% Chardonnay and 2% Symphony—a UC Davis hybrid adding floral notes.
    WW 88
  • CK Mondavi Merlot California 2014 ($6.99)
